RAVENSWOOD, W. Va. (WV News) — While the season came to a quick ending in postseason play (against state runner-up Point Pleasant), reflecting on Ravenswood girls varsity soccer for 2023 creates an abundance of positives.
“I started the first practice of the season with 13 players,” said head coach Delaine Carter. “By the end of the week, I had 17,”
Three seniors — Brooklyn Adams, Lily White and Emily Wratchford — joined the team to bolster the numbers.
Junior Lauren Roush also came on board. Carter also added Aniyah Briggs, a freshman and future goalie.
Ravenswood rolled to a 14-2 record, which included winning a historic first-ever Little Kanawha Conference championship.
The Devilettes defeated Braxton County, 5-1, in the title showdown.
Ravenswood had battled the Eagles to a 3-3 tie earlier in the season before earning a 3-1 home victory later in the year.
Maci Mosser had a sensational season leading Ravenswood in goals this season with 26. She had 128 shots on goal for the year. When not scoring, she added 16 assists.
Mosser not only garnered First Team All-Little Kanawha Conference honors but captured the league’s prestigious “Player of the Year” award.
Brooke Meadows, the team’s goalie, allowed just 18 goals on the year. She had 91 saves and recorded eight shutouts.
Zoie Meadows, a junior, had 21 goals and three assists.
Wratchford, a first-year player, scored 12 goals.
Brooke Meadows and Zoie Meadows joined Mosser as First Team All-Little Kanwaha Conference picks.
Miranda Barker earned Honorable Mention in the All-LKC voting.
Not only did some of the players receive well-deserved honors but so, too, did their head coach. Carter was voted the 2023 Little Kanawha Conference’s “Coach of the Year.”
Carter has been Ravenswood’s leader for girls soccer since 2019.
Graduating seniors this spring will be Adams, White, Barker, Brooke Meadows, Mosser and Wratchford.
“I worked hard recruiting and reaching out to athletes that played other sports,” Carter said. “Jayden Moore and Kassidy Shoemaker joined the team last year after the season had started and both earned a position playing defense, making a positive impact in the backfield.
“Addie McCorkle joined the team this year as a freshman transfer. Her skill set, ability to play the ball and win possession, and most importantly, her knowledge of the game has proven to be a great asset to the team.”
Carter added, “It was a great season for Ravenswood High School girls soccer. Winning the first-ever LKC championship. I am thankful for the opportunity to build a competitive team at Ravenswood High School.”
