GRANTSVILLE — The JTF Ice Rink at the Grantsville Town Park is back, and Mike McCloskey reported that the 2023-24 skating season will be bigger and better.
“Last year’s skating season hosted nearly 4,000 skaters,” he said. “With the continued support of the Town of Grantsville, there have been numerous improvements to the town park and the areas in and around pavilion three.”
He noted that the state of Maryland, especially the director of Parks and Recreation, was impressed by the success of the rink last year and has provided support to the town to expand the pavilion and continue improvements to it for use 365 days a year.
“This year we hope to surpass the attendance of last season and continue to bring a fun winter activity to the residents of Western Maryland and all our out-of-town travelers,” McCloskey said.
Remodeling and upgrades to the pavilion are ongoing, with the ice-making equipment scheduled to be turned on the weekend of Nov. 18. The rink is set to open on Nov. 24, the day after Thanksgiving. JTF will hold multiple daily public skate sessions, six days a week (closed on Wednesdays) for $5 admission and $2 skate rentals.
The JTF Ice Rink will have time slots available for private rentals such as family gatherings, birthday parties and group rentals. Starting in December, Learn to Skate sessions will teach the basic skills needed to skate for $25. The Learn to Skate sessions are appropriate for age 4 and up (including adults).
An Afterschool Skate is planned for 4-6 p.m. Monday through Friday for $5, which includes rental skates “for a great way to for kids to burn off that school energy and get exercise.” Once the rink is up and going, private skating lessons will be offered during public sessions.
Groups that would like to book the rink during hours not listed as open may contact JTF directly at Jointtrainingfacility@gmail.com or 240-284-4000.
“The ice is always there; we can accommodate all requests,” McCloskey said.
The Ice Rink is planned to run from November to February, depending on the weather.
“We will have a viewing area for non-skaters and parents, but it will not be heated so everyone needs to dress appropriately for the outside temperatures,” McCloskey said.
JTF will have an onsite concession stand with snacks, some hot food and drinks. JTF encourages everyone to visit the website www.jtf1.com/jtf-ice-rink to reserve their spots for skating. Space will be limited for each session due to the size of the rink. Daily space and weather updates for sessions will be posted on the Facebook page (JTF1).
“The JTF Ice Rink will be double the size and give skaters a more enjoyable experience,” McCloskey said. “As the only ice rink in the area, JTF continues to strive to bring affordable family fun and excitement to the area. With the support of local business sponsorships, the cost of skating is kept affordable for all to enjoy.”
Sponsorships are still available, and interested businesses can contact JTF.
“JTF is excited to bring ice skating back to Western Maryland,” McCloskey said. “Ice skating is a great activity for the whole family. We look forward to seeing everyone there!”
