ACTION JACKSON: One has to be happy for former Ravenswood football standout and long-time assistant Jason Jackson as he is part of the historic run taking place across the river in Meigs County.
Jackson’s Eastern football team (see related story on sports pages) will be playing tonight for a regional championship in Ohio’s smallest classification (Division VII) against Caldwell at Warren Warrior Stadium in Barlow.
This marks Jackson’s second straight appearance in the Ohio playoffs.
Last year, Eastern reached the second round.
Now playing in a regional final, this is the deepest journey in the postseason for any of the three high schools in Meigs County (Meigs Local and Southern Local are the other two).
The Ohio high school football season is 16 weeks long, Jackson and company are hopeful of reaching that Sweet 16 stage.
The state titles will be played at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 in Canton.
Eastern would play on Dec. 2 at 10:30 a.m. if it can reach that destination.
Good luck to Coach Jackson, the Sturms (assistants Steve and Thomas, who also hail from Ravenswood) and the Eagles.
BIG BEND AREA: Not far from Eastern High School is Wahama.
The White Falcons continue their postseason journey tonight at Cavalier Field on the campus of Greenbrier West High School in Charmco.
Wahama and the Cavaliers both enter at 11-0.
Greenbrier West is guided by first-year head coach Kelly Vaughan, a former West and Wake Forest standout.
One of his assistants is Owen Schmitt, the former Mountaineer football star.
REMEMBERING CUB: Speaking of Greenbrier West, the Cavalier program continues to mourn along with the town of Ravenswood, the passing of Greg “Cub” Curry.
The former Red Devil standout died recently following a long illness.
Curry was an outstanding lineman on the Ravenswood Red Devil football team of 1974, which finished 10-0 before falling to eventual state champion Stonewall Jackson in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs.
Curry later played football at West Virginia State.
He was a fixture in Greenbrier County for many years as a teacher and coach. He spent several seasons at Greenbrier East before making his way to Greenbrier West.
CONDOLENCES TO COACH PRICE AND FAMILY: We send out our heartfelt sympathy to Ravenswood head boys basketball coach Mick Price and his family following the passing of Coach Gerry White, who died suddenly last week.
Coach White was Price’s brother-in-law. The husband of Price’s sister, Kathy.
I had the pleasure of getting to know Coach White during his days working the sidelines for North Marion High School football.
White guided the Huskies to a Class AAA state championship victory in 1997.
White was honored as being the head coach of the North squad during the 1998 WCHS-TV/FOX 11 North-South All-Star Football Classic.
White was the head coach at North Marion from 1991-2008. He was the second head coach in school history following the legend Roy Michael, who died earlier this year. Daran Hayes is currently the head coach at North Marion, just the third football leader since the school opened in 1979.
“He was just a good, good dude,” said Price who was still coming to grips with the passing of his brother-in-law.
On a journey with Price to check out all the past schools in Marion County back in the summer of 2019, we stopped by to see his sister and brother-in-law. It was a real treat sitting and talking to Gerry.
RIP, Coach White.
CONGRATS TO MCNABB: Former Ravenswood tennis player Alex McNabb has garnered her second state championship in the span of three years as head coach for Carolina Forest High School, located in South Carolina.
Her girls tennis team captured the 5A state title. The State Tournament was played in Florence.
Carolina Forest also won the championship in 2021.
The last four champs of 5A tennis in South Carolina have come from Horry County.
Socastee won crowns in 2020 and 2022.
Socastee is the school where current Marshall head coach Dan D’Antoni spent 30 years as the head boys basketball coach.
We will be catching up with McNabb for a feature story on her coaching success in SC.
RAM TOUGH: Annie Hunt, a former Ravenswood basketball All-Stater, made her debut recently at Shepherd University.
After two seasons with Wheeling, Hunt has moved on to the Eastern Panhandle school.
Against Virginia State, Hunt made her debut in the blue and gold with four points, three rebounds and one assist.
We look forward to watching Hunt’s progress at her new basketball home.
