West Virginia's Division of Highways is taking advantage of the mild weather to prepare for the upcoming snow and ice season. Kathy Rushworth, the DOH District 1 Maintenance Engineer, discussed the agency's preparations at a DOH garage in North Charleston.
Rushworth stated that despite the warm November weather, their trucks are ready, and their salt bins have been filled since October. The DOH has stockpiled 231,000 tons of snow for distribution across the state.
In Region 1, consisting of Kanawha, Boone, Clay, Putnam, and Mason counties, there are 14 maintenance garages, over 100 trucks, and 250 employees who will be responsible for snow removal and ice control this winter. Rushworth emphasized the importance of motorists also preparing for winter driving conditions.
She advises allowing more time for travel, ensuring vehicles are in good condition, and planning for the expected driving conditions. Currently, there are no snowstorms on the horizon according to Rushworth's forecast until November 26th. In the meantime, the trucks will be utilized for hauling asphalt and stone for maintenance activities.
