Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023, has been proclaimed National Rural Health Day by the National Organizations of State Offices of Rural Health as a way to showcase the good work of America’s 62 million rural citizens and to promote the efforts of the Maryland State Office of Rural Health, and other partners in addressing rural health concerns. Governor Wes Moore has proclaimed Nov. 16, 2023, as Maryland Rural Health Day.
On Tuesday, Nov.14, 2023, the Council held its 2023 Rural Summit titled “Pathways to Prosperity,” which included discussions on improving health- care access in rural areas. One alarming issue discussed was the nationwide closure of pharmacies, creating “pharmacy deserts” in underserved communities. These closures leave many residents without access to essential medications and health-care services.
Rural areas are already facing numerous challenges when it comes to health-care access, and the closure of pharmacies only exacerbates these issues. Without nearby pharmacies, residents are forced to travel longer distances to obtain necessary medications, which can be particularly burdensome for elderly individuals or those with limited means of transportation.
The consequences of these closures are far-reaching and will have a profound impact on the overall health and well-being of rural communities. It not only affects individuals who rely on regular prescriptions, but also poses significant risks in emergency situations where immediate access to medication is vital.
It is crucial for state, local and federal elected officials and policymakers to recognize the important of supporting and funding programs that address the health-care needs of rural communities. Initiatives such as telehealth or mobile units could help bridge the gap and ensure that rural residents have access. The Rural Maryland Council plans to develop policy recommendations for the Moore Administration and the Maryland General Assembly for the upcoming 2024 legislative session.
On this Maryland Rural Health Day, let us remember the significance of health care and wellness in quality of life. Our rural communities are stepping up and finding creative ways to address the problem. Together, we can improve the quality of life throughout our state and reduce health disparities in rural, urban and suburban Maryland.
