The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra began on September 19, 1939, when 55 musicians gathered for their first rehearsal as the Charleston Civic Orchestra. Under the direction of William R. Wiant, their first concert was given at Charleston ‘s Municipal Auditorium on Nov. 14, 1939.
The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra hosted its annual Young People's Concert, titled "The Building Blocks of Music," at the Clay Center in Charleston on Tuesday. The event aimed to teach students from Kanawha County and surrounding areas about the essential elements of music, including melody, harmony, and rhythm.
Amanda McDonald, the Marketing Director of the WV Symphony, expressed her excitement about the event, noting that it may be the first time many of the students have attended a symphony concert or visited the Clay Center. McDonald explained that Music Director Maurice Cohn interacted with the students between musical pieces, providing kid-friendly explanations of what was happening in the music. The concert featured shorter pieces to maintain the students' attention.
In addition to experiencing the symphony, the students were introduced to classical instruments like violins and cellos for the first time. McDonald mentioned that students from Kanawha, Putnam, and Cabell counties, as well as some schools from Ripley, attended the event at the Clay Center.
By hosting these concerts, the WV Symphony aims to expose children throughout the state to classical music. McDonald emphasized that the concerts offer a unique opportunity for kids to witness a professional orchestra performance and interact with the musicians. She added that the WV Symphony would visit Parkersburg on Wednesday and Clarksburg on Thursday as part of the children's symphony event.
McDonald also highlighted the upcoming seasonal performances by the WV Symphony. These include three performances of "Sounds Throughout the Season" and a collaboration with the Charleston Ballet for "The Nutcracker." For a complete list of performances, interested individuals can visit the WV Symphony website.
Overall, the annual Young People's Concert by the WV Symphony provided students from various counties in West Virginia with an educational and enjoyable experience of live symphony music, exposing them to the fundamental elements of music and classical instruments.
