OAKLAND — A group of students from Broad Ford Elementary, Crellin Elementary, and Swan Meadow School recently went on a field trip.
The group has been studying philately (study and collection of stamps) as a class project with Suzanne Wilburn.
Students were given a tour of the Oakland Post Office by Postmaster James Everheart and his staff to learn about the collection and distribution of the mail. Students learned about the economics involved with the purchase and delivery of stamps and packages processed by the Oakland branch of the USPS. Everheart also shared some of the history of the building and its unique features.
After the tour of the post office, the group traveled to The Garrett Arts Council, $mart Art studio for a presentation by local artists Mark and Laura Stutzman on stamp design. The Stutzmans displayed examples of work they have done on stamps that were accepted by the USPS for sale through the years, including the iconic Elvis stamp. Students were able to ask questions and see numerous examples of the different types of media used in the design process.
As a culminating activity, a template was created to help the students illustrate their own unique stamp design, which mimics the process used by professional artists.
