A forest fire in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in Glen Jean, West Virginia, has grown to over 2,000 acres in size, according to officials from the National Park Service. The fire, known as the Steep Mountain Fire, is currently 70 percent contained but continues to burn in a difficult-to-reach area on a steep mountainside, specifically in the War Ridge and Backus Mountain regions.
To combat the blaze, authorities have brought in a helicopter to transport water from the nearby New River to the fire site, located just a few hundred yards up the mountain. The helicopter is also conducting aerial water drops from the eastern edge of the fire. Currently, there are 69 firefighting personnel from various National Parks and National Forest units across the country assisting in the efforts to control the fire. Additionally, a private firefighting team from Oregon has arrived to provide assistance.
Unfortunately, the drying trend and weather patterns experienced this week have not been favorable in slowing down the spread of the fire. In fact, these conditions have contributed to the fire's reanimation in the area.
As a result, residents and visitors can expect smoke within the Gorge for the next few days. The heavy smoke from the Steep Valley Fire may also impair visibility for motorists. The levels of smoke are being regularly monitored by an air resource advisor. Individuals who are part of sensitive groups may experience health effects within 24 hours of exposure to the increased smoke in the area.
The Steep Valley Fire in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve continues to be a cause for concern as it crosses the 2,000-acre mark. Efforts are underway to contain the fire and protect the natural beauty and resources of the park.
