INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Both the Oakland FFA and North Garrett FFA chapters recently attended the 96th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.
During the four days of the convention, students were able to attend workshops, listen to keynote speakers, attend empowering sessions and meet individuals from across the United States, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
“We are thrilled to have been able to partake in this experience and would like to thank everyone that purchased sausage from our members to help them raise money for their trip,” said Lexi Trickett, Oakland FFA advisor. “We look forward to going back to Indy next fall.”
At the convention, four Garrett County FFA members received the American FFA Degree, which less than 1% of the nation’s members receive. They were Mariah Klotz of Oakland FFA and Alex Crayton, Madilyn Magruder and Kyle Chaney of North Garrett.
This degree of active membership is awarded by the National FFA Organization and is the highest level of active membership which can be achieved within the FFA.
This final step in the FFA degree system encourages members to grow and achieve personally toward establishing an agricultural career. Members may apply for their American degree only if they have received the state FFA degree, have graduated from high school at least 12 months prior to the National Convention and meet the high standards for the degree.
Klotz was an active member of the Oakland FFA Chapter all four years of high school and has continued to help mentor members and assist at events after her time at Southern High School had ended.
She worked during her time in FFA to grow her commercial breeding herd and to produce efficient animals for each fair season.
“Determination through FFA and the drive to achieve goals will come to you through hard work,” Klotz said. “Putting in the time and effort will only pay off in the end. All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. — Proverbs 14:23”
She recently completed the Welding Certification program through Garrett College and is now AWS certified in all Stick Positions. In January, she will begin her journey at Pennsylvania State University, studying Agribusiness.
Crayton graduated in 2022 and her SAE Project was poultry and market goats.
Magruder graduated in 2021. Her SAE was market and breed sheep production.
Chaney graduated in 2022 and his SAE projects were his market steers and working for his family’s excavating service.
