West Virginia's buck firearms season is set to begin on November 20, and along with it, the Big Buck Photo Contest is making a return. In order to have the opportunity to take an additional buck, hunters must purchase their license and deer stamps before the season starts, according to Governor Jim Justice. The two-week hunting season will run until December 3.
The Big Buck Photo Contest will open on November 21, and participants must submit their photos along with a short account of their hunt by December 22 to be eligible for the prizes. To enter, hunters must hold a valid 2023 West Virginia hunting license and provide the 13-digit WVDNR-issued game check number for their buck.
There are different prize categories for residents and non-residents. The Resident Youth Division will randomly select five winners who will receive a free resident lifetime West Virginia hunting and fishing license. The Resident Adult Division will also randomly select five winners who can choose between a free resident lifetime West Virginia hunting license, a two-night stay in a Cabwaylingo State Forest cabin, or a two-night stay in a Seneca State Forest cabin.
For non-residents, the Non-Resident Youth Division will randomly select five winners who will receive a Cabela's prize package. The Non-Resident Adult Division will also randomly select five winners who can choose between a two-night stay in a North Bend State Park cabin, a two-night stay in a Twin Falls Resort State Park cabin, or two Pipestem Peaks Zipline Tour passes.
Once the contest is closed, a random drawing will determine finalists from each division. Entries will be judged based on factors such as photo composition, antler size, antler points, and the quality of the hunt narrative. The winners will be announced in January 2024.
To have the chance to harvest an additional buck, resident hunters and non-resident hunters must purchase a Class RG or Class RRG stamp, respectively, by 11:59 p.m. on November 19. Licenses and stamps can be purchased online at WVhunt.com or at authorized license retailers.
