Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV, has decided to discontinue five degree programs as part of its efforts to right-size the institution. This decision, approved by the university's Board of Governors, is expected to contribute approximately $5 million towards the goal of $6 million in base budget adjustments. The Academic Affairs leadership at Shepherd proposed and received approval for an academic prioritization plan, which includes the elimination of five degree programs and eight minors or concentrations.
The programs that will be discontinued are:
The Master of Science in data analytics and information systems
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in nutrition
B.S. in computer and information technology
B.S. in computer engineering
and B.S. in data analytics.
However, the university plans to integrate the curriculum of these programs into a single degree, Bachelor of Science in computer and information sciences with concentrations in cybersecurity and information science, ensuring that the instructional content in these areas continues to be offered.
The university will implement teach-out plans for each program in accordance with national standards. Additionally, 12 other programs have been directed to make efficiency improvements. The Board of Governors' approval concludes a four-month process of analyzing academic priorities and implementing measures to improve the university's fiscal position.
As a result of discontinuing the programs, 13 faculty positions are expected to be eliminated, some in the 2024-2025 academic year and some in the following year. Shepherd University President Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix expressed gratitude to the campus community for their dedication to the university's future during this challenging self-assessment process. She highlighted the collective effort made by institutional leaders and recognized their ownership of this decision.
Chair of the Board of Governors, Gat Caperton, emphasized the institution's commitment to its core values and providing students with a high-quality education grounded in the liberal arts. Caperton acknowledged the exceptional faculty and staff who contribute to the university's success in a personal and meaningful way.
