OAKLAND — This year was noted as a huge success in Oakland Rotary Club french fry sales, which translates directly into donations to local nonprofit organizations.
This year through nine different venues, the club grossed $81,882 in sales just selling fries, water and soda.
The most profitable event is the week of the Garrett County Fair, but other venues Rotary sells participates with each year are Summerfest, Victorian Chautauqua, the Big Funky Blues Festival, the Dragonboat Races, Art and Wine Festival, the Fireman’s Parade, the Autumn Glory Festival and the Autumn Glory Car Show.
The club went through just over 10,000 pounds of potatoes. That’s five tons all sold at festivals, fairs and other events just in Garrett County. And after recouping expenses, the vast majority of all sales are reinvested back into the community.
Grant Award recipients from the 2022 cycle include: Cindy’s Fund, the Dove Center, Garrett Mentors, Habitat for Humanity, American Cancer Society/Relay for Life, Landon’s Library, The Chris Lantz Foundation, Southern Garrett County Rescue Squad, GLAF, Southern Garrett JROTC, Garrett Choral Society, Hospice, GCPS Foundation, House of Hope, Oakland Cemetery Monuments Restoration Committee, and the Oakland Youth Baseball and Softball Leagues.
The club will do another round of donations from the proceeds from the 2023 sales.
All local Garrett County nonprofits are invited to make a request for funds annually. Local club members vote and decide which charities are supported each year.
Nonprofits that volunteer for work shifts at the fry booth during the fair are also eligible for grant money.
Local club President John Hetrick expressed his pride in the most recent accomplishments by saying, “This community never stops amazing me! I would like to thank all our Rotarians, volunteer groups, and patrons. Thank you all for making this year a huge success and allowing our club to continue in our tradition of selling delicious Rotary fries so we can give back to our friends and neighbors through our annual charitable giving and our annual Christmas Project. We cannot wait for next year to do it all over again!”
The Rotary Club of Oakland is celebrating its 98th year of service to Garrett County.
Visit the Facebook page for information on how to join the club (Rotary Club of Oakland, Md). The club meets at noon for lunch each Thursday at the Proctor-Kildow American Legion on Memorial Drive, and the Satellite Club meets monthly over a dinner at a different local restaurant for those that can’t make a weekly lunch.
