CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — After leading their team to the Class AAA quarterfinals and the Big 10 Conference title, Myleigh Smell and Ali Burton were voted by the conference’s coaches as the player of the year and coach of the year, respectively, for the 2023 season.
The list was announced on Monday.
Smell smacked 462 kills (4.1 per set) in 1,155 attempts with only 142 errors to hit an excellent .277.
She also served 69 aces and posted a 93.7% serving percentage to go with 43 blocks and 340 digs.
Smell is joined on the first team by teammates Ella Sorine (1,026 assists, 199 digs, 102 aces, 94.7% serving) and Kaylee Enfield (395 digs, 65 aces).
Philip Barbour, which made the Class AA final yet again and placed second in the conference, is led on the first team by MacKenna Halfin (605 kills, .351 hitting percentage, 96 blocks, 491 digs) and Katie Kennedy (227 kills, 662 assists, 338 digs).
Liberty, third in the Big 10 and a state quarterfinalist in Class AA, had Hailey Haynes (303 kills, 63 blocks, 31 aces) as a first-teamer.
Robert C. Byrd, in fourth, had a pair of first team selections in Emma Swiger (256 kills, 47 aces, 37 blocks, 386 digs) and Hope Vernon (151 kills, 62 blocks, 58 aces, 195 digs).
Buckhannon-Upshur’s Alyssa Abel (174 kills, 162 digs), East Fairmont’s Leah Dawson (56 aces, 363 digs), Preston’s Brooke Snyder and Lewis County’s Chloe Richards (216 kills, 76 aces, 29 blocks, 333 digs) round out the first team.
The second team is Bridgeport’s Caroline Deniker; Buckhannon-Upshur’s Abby Hurst; East Fairmont’s Callie Lindsey, Elkins’ Emerson Haddix, Grafton’s Kenna Keener; Liberty’s Aspen Hixenbaugh and Maddy McGill; Lincoln’s Alli Bragg; North Marion’s Taylene Beckner; Philip Barbour’s Finley Carpenter; and Robert C. Byrd’s Gina Alvaro.
