HEREFORD — The Northern Huskies and Southern Rams competed at the MPSSAA 1A State Championship on Saturday at Hereford High School.
The two schools had five all-state runners combined and had several impressive performances across the board.
Girls’ State Meet Recap
Although the Northern Lady Huskies’ bid for a fourth-consecutive state title came up just short, their third-place finish marked the eighth year in a row where the Northern girls placed in the top three at the state meet.
Their score of 91 came behind state runner-up Harford Tech (88) and state champion Smithsburg (69).
Leading the Huskies was senior Lydia Nelson who capped off her outstanding career with a sixth-place time of 21:00.84. Northern junior Kaylee Bowser clocked a 21:24.98 to take eighth. Nelson and Bowser each earned all-state honors.
Also scoring for the Huskies were sophomores Danika Krause (28th, 22:49.07) and Marisa Perez (33rd, 23:03.09) and junior Isabella Yoder (36th, 23:09.17). Senior Katelyn VanSickle finished the course in 39th with a time of 23:41.95 as well.
The Southern girls placed ninth out of 13 scoring teams with a score of 228. Lady Ram sophomore Emelee Parks paced her way to a 27th-place finish by recording a 22:47.54. Junior Kaylee Stewart finished the course in 51st with a 24:32.86, sophomore Emma Skeens followed in 54th (24:36.82), senior Danielle Brobst came in 57th (24:56.93) and sophomore Chloe Campbell crossed the finish line in 96th (29:42.87).
There were 102 runners representing 26 schools in the girls’ state championship meet. Smithsburg junior Cora Gentzel won the individual title with a time of 19:43.05. Her teammate Michaela Gross was second with a 20:16.96.
The girls’ team standings begin with state-champion Smithsburg (69) followed by Harford Tech (88), Northern (91), Catoctin (95), Liberty (117), Patterson Mill (138), Allegany (170), Carver A&T (209), Southern (228), Bohemia Manor (249), Francis Scott Key (264), Havre De Grace (291) and Loch Raven (311).
Boys’ State Meet Recap
Although the Southern boys did not record a team score, all three of their runners received all-state honors.
Sophomore Benjamin Brobst placed 10th overall out of 133 runners with a time of 17:54.73, junior Jackson Hordubay clocked an 18:04.41 to take 15th and senior Michael Nazelrod ended the course in 20th with an 18:09.62.
Northern placed ninth out of 17 scoring teams with a time of 215.
Freshmen Chace Winebrenner (35th, 18:42.57) and Jakob Fullerton (42nd, 18:56.81) led the Huskies while senior Logan Frazee (44th, 18:59.01) and freshman Brady Garlitz (49th, 19:03.18) also placed within the top 50. Completing the scoring was senior Jensen Wilt who placed 86th with a time of 20:09.03.
Also running in the race for the Huskies were freshman Isaac Saturday (100th, 20:46.08) and junior Ted Guingrich (104th, 20:51.45).
It was a good learning experience for the youthful Husky squad that sent four freshmen to the state meet. Winebrenner, Fullerton and Garlitz also posted the top three best times out of all freshmen at the state meet. Isaac Saturday recorded the eighth-best freshman time.
Liberty dominated the boys’ state meet as it cruised to a state title with a score of 28. Four of Liberty’s five scoring runners placed within the top seven. Liberty junior Gregory Schellberg recorded a time of 16:35 to win the individual title, a time that was a full 26 seconds faster than second-place finisher Gabriel Riling (Catoctin, 17:01.16).
Following Liberty in the team standings were Catoctin (134), Bohemia Manor (136), Patterson Mill (157), Harford Tech (159), Smithsburg (173), Brunswick (196), Francis Scott Key (199), Northern (215), Carver A&T (225), Boonsboro (270), Cambridge South Dorchester (291), Havre De Grace (304), Loch Raven (425), Western Tech (431), South Carroll (439) and Edmondson-Westside (439).
There were 28 schools represented in the boys’ state meet.
