With a new Congress in session in 2023, I want legislators to listen to the experiences of app-based earners and advocate for bipartisan policies that will maintain gig worker’s flexibility and freedom as they look to the policy priorities ahead.
I used to own the J.W. Price Cab Company in Fairmont, West Virginia, so I am used to being on the road. More importantly, setting my own schedule and getting paid when I want helps me be present for my family. But the Labor Department proposal concerning independent work could challenge my way of making a living. And I’m not the only one — at the end of the comment period on December 13, thousands of independent workers submitted comments about the proposed ruling and its impact on their lives.
It could strip away why people like me choose the work in the first place: flexibility. As a single father, driving with DoorDash allows me to be flexible with work to be present for my 3-year-old daughter’s life and provide a steady income for my family.
The flexibility of DoorDash gives me the chance to earn an income without having to work long hours, and days on end. Politicians like Senators Manchin and Capito need to realize that their constituents want and need them to protect their flexibility and independence instead of allowing these restrictive policies to pass.
