DEER PARK — Plans were finalized for the annual town Christmas party during the regular monthly meeting of the Deer Park Town Council on Monday evening.
The event is for families in Deer Park and the surrounding areas. It is planned for Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Deer Park Community Center, located at 100 Church St.
The party will begin at 6 p.m., with Santa arriving by fire truck at 6:30 p.m.
There will be refreshments for everyone, and gifts for children.
The town received a check from the Deer Park-Swanton Lions Club for $600 for candy and gifts.
The fire truck will be provided by the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department, and a donation will be made to the organization.
It was noted that a total of 70 gifts were prepared for last year’s party, but only three children attended because of the cold weather. The remaining gifts were given to other groups such as daycares and churches.
In other business:
• The town Christmas tree and gazebo will be decorated beginning around 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2.
• Various town bills were approved by the council for payment.
• Mayor Donald Dawson and Councilman Bob Beverage reported on their assessment of several trees in the town that need to be cut down.
There was also some discussion about painting that needs to be done at the Deer Park Community Building, which is where town meetings are currently held.
• The council discussed moving an amount of money from the town’s account into a money market account at a separate bank. Various banks and rates were mentioned, and a decision was made to move the funds.
• There was some discussion about the street lights that are still needed in the town, as well as the need for lights at the entrance to the Dollar General store.
• It was noted that the town audit is still underway.
The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 11 at the Deer Park Community Center.
