Most people know that eating to fuel the body is really important, but eating for brain health is as equally important. Our brains need optimal nutrition to maintain concentration and stay healthy.
Some foods provide better nutrition for our energy consuming brains. Studies show that our brains use around 20% of the body’s calories, so it is a good idea to provide plenty of the right fuel.
Certain nutrients help build and repair brain cells. This is positive information for those interested in reducing the risk of brain-related diseases such as dementias. Research shows that diet and lifestyle are factors associated with the causes and risks of developing Alzheimer’s.
So, which foods can help reduce cellular stress and inflammation — conditions linked to brain aging and neurodegenerative disorders?
Salmon or other oily fish high in omega-3 fatty acids help build membranes around brain cells, therefore improving the structure of neurons.
Flavonoids found in some fruits and vegetables enhance and protect vascular and cognitive functions. Start the day with 100% orange juice to give the brain a boost of flavonoids.
Pumpkin seeds are full of zinc and contain powerful antioxidants that promote brain health. If you clipped last week’s roasted pumpkin seed recipe, then be sure to make some soon.
Blueberries have been shown in studies to enhance brain activity. Research indicates that antioxidants found in blueberries accumulate in the brain and improve communication between brain cells.
Walnuts contain omega-3 fatty acids and other compounds that support brain health and heart health. Having a healthy heart is linked to having a healthy brain. Next time you make a trail mix, be sure to add walnuts.
Also add dark chocolate pieces to that trail mix. Yes, that is right, dark chocolate is packed with flavonoids, caffeine, and antioxidants. Eating dark chocolate may enhance memory and slow down age-related mental decline.
Like dark chocolate, coffee contains caffeine and antioxidants. If you, like me, start your day with a cup of coffee, then you will be glad to know that it has positive effects on the brain. Starting your day with a cup of coffee sharpens concentration and alertness, which as a mother of three, I need.
Other foods such as eggs, broccoli, mushrooms, and green tea also promote brain health. As the control center of our bodies, the brain is in charge of a lot. The brain keeps our hearts beating, lungs breathing, and allows us to think, move, and feel.
The foods we eat directly play a role in keeping our brains healthy. Support your brain health and boost your memory, alertness, and mood by including the above-mentioned foods in your daily life.
