West Virginia has the highest rates of adult smokers and the second-highest rates of new lung cancer cases in the United States, according to the "State of Lung Cancer" report released by the American Lung Association.
The report also reveals that West Virginia ranks poorly for lung cancer survival, with a rate of 22.4 percent compared to the national rate of 26.6 percent.
Michael Seilback, National Assistant Vice President for State Public Policy with the American Lung Association, highlighted the need for increased efforts to reduce the burden of lung cancer and help individuals quit smoking. He emphasized the importance of investing in state programs, increasing access to treatment and screenings, and urging more people to quit smoking.
The report also showed that Utah has the best lung cancer rate while Kentucky has the worst.
