More than 1,100 customers on Charleston's West Side could be without natural gas service for several days following the flooding of Mountaineer Gas' distribution system. The flooding occurred after a water main break at the West Virginia American Water Company last Friday.
The water infiltrated Mountaineer's low pressure system that supplies gas to homes and businesses. Mountaineer Gas has its own personnel and contractors working to dry out the lines and restore service, but it may take a few days. All customer meters have been turned off, and door-to-door visits will be necessary to ensure safety before service can be restored.
As a result of the gas service outage, Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary School in Kanawha County will be closed again on Tuesday. Residents, like Jules Torco, are feeling the impact of the outage, particularly during cold nights. Torco expressed the frustration and devastation experienced by the community due to the lack of heat and the inability to bathe.
Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin voiced her frustration with the lack of communication from both Mountaineer Gas and West Virginia American Water in a statement released on Monday. Goodwin called for immediate and accurate communication to be delivered to the affected residents and businesses.
In response to the situation, Goodwin's office collaborated with the Red Cross to establish a warming shelter over the weekend, although no one utilized it. Two community centers, namely the North Charleston Community Center and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, were made available on Monday for individuals seeking warm showers. Despite the challenges faced by Torco and his neighbors, they are determined to endure until the problem is resolved, emphasizing the need for a fix to this serious issue.
