West Virginia closed out its fall rifle schedule with wins over Air Force, Murray State and Nebraska in the weekend's Fall Classic at the WVU Shell Building. The trio of wins over Top 10 foes, produced with a Mountaineer aggregate score of 4741, will likely keep the Mountaineers as the No.1 ranked team in the nation heading into the spring semester.
"This fall season has been good overall and we have made some improvements from last year and the team has worked really hard to be where we are at," head coach Jon Hammond said of a semester in which the Mountaineers recorded four aggregate scores of 4741 or higher and earned a perfect 9-0 match record. "It was great to shoot a match over two days and gain that experience for competitions next semester."
WVU, which is also 3-0 in the Great American Rifle Conference, downed Air Force (4709), Nebraska (4700) and Murray State (4692). WVU shot 2363 in smallbore, just three points off its season-best, while also producing a 2378 in air rifle. Those team scores took first in each discipline.
West Virginia's counters in smallbore were Gavin Barnick, Malori Brown, Griffin Lake, Molly McGhin and Matt Sanchez. Barnick, Lake, McGhin, Sanchez and Natalie Perrin were on the counting squad in air rifle. McGhin's 594 led the former group, while Lake's 596 topped the latter.
WVU's Mary Tucker did not compete in the event as she continued to take a break after multiple competitions at the Pan American Games.
The team will now get some downtime to rest and refocus for the second half of the season, which begins against Army on Jan. 20 at the WVU Rifle Range. The Mountaineers will then travel to Navy and host Kentucky before shooting in their NCAA qualifying match in mid-February. That will lead the Mountaineers into the GARC Championships on Feb. 24 at West Point, New York, and then, barring any unexpected results, into the NCAA Championships at the WVU Coliseum on March 8-9.
