A man from Florida is facing a significant fine from the federal government after attempting to bring a loaded gun onto a flight at an airport in West Virginia. The incident occurred on Monday at Raleigh County Memorial Airport, according to a press release from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
The handgun, a .380 caliber firearm, was detected by an X-ray machine during the security screening process. TSA reported that the gun was loaded with six bullets. Upon discovering the weapon, TSA immediately informed a deputy from the Raleigh County sheriff's office, who allowed the man to return the gun to his vehicle. The TSA stated that the man now faces a substantial financial penalty from the federal government due to his actions. These penalties can reach up to $15,000, depending on the circumstances.
Travelers who carry guns and gun parts with them at security checkpoints can be subject to civil penalties from the TSA, regardless of whether they possess a concealed carry permit. The TSA emphasized that even with a concealed carry permit, firearms are not allowed to be brought onto airplanes.
John C. Allen, the Federal Security Director for West Virginia, stated in the press release that guns have been forbidden in the cabin of planes for decades. Allen emphasized that there is no need for passengers to bring guns to the checkpoint, as it only leads to delays and inconvenience for other travelers. Responsible gun owners are aware of the regulations surrounding their firearms and understand that carrying them onto a flight is not permitted.
