RIPLEY, W.Va. (WV News) — The establishment of three new funds was approved by the Jackson County Commission at Wednesday’s meeting in anticipation of funds from three sources coming into the budget.
The Fire Protection Fund and the EMS Salary Enhancement Fund will deal with monies allocated by the West Virginia State Legislature in the 2023 session. The Opioid Settlement Fund will receive the revenue allotted to the county from the State of West Virginia’s opioid litigation settlements.
As the revenues are received, they will then be earmarked and distributed as directed in the guidelines provided.
Commissioners Dick Waybright and Mitch Morrison also received an update on the proposed upgrade to the county’s 911 communication system. In a previous meeting, 911 Director Montana Boggess introduced the idea of the Zetron company’s microwave system that would allow more efficiency in communication between first responders.
Representatives from the company gave a brief presentation and answered questions from the commissioners. While the process would be expected to take from six months to a year to complete, there would be no need to replace radios or portable devices.
“The ability for our police and EMS to not have to manually change towers as they’re on high-speed call is one of the greatest things this new system will do,” Boggess said. “It will pick up the nearest tower seamlessly which provides both safety and effectiveness.”
Boggess said that more details need to be addressed before she is ready to present a final proposal.
In the only personnel item, Mary Sue Cain was transferred from a part-time to a full-time legal assistant position. No rate of pay was provided to the public.
With the cancellation of the November 22 meeting, the commission will next convene on Wednesday, November 29 at 9:30 a.m. at the courthouse.
