The cooler weather, along with the approaching holidays, is inspiring me to bake. I love filling the house with scrumptious aromas that bring everyone to the kitchen.
Cinnamon is such a lovely, warm scent. It’s appetizing and elevates several types of dishes. One of my favorite ways to incorporate cinnamon when baking is to make homemade cinnamon rolls.
Homemade cinnamon rolls are such a treat. I don’t know many people who would refuse a freshly made cinnamon roll. In fact, I cannot think of one person who would turn one down.
This is an easy recipe and perfect for first-time bakers or those who want a quicker approach to homemade cinnamon rolls.
I hope you give this recipe a try. It’s a great one to have on hands for entertaining family and friends.
Cinnamon Rolls
Dough
2 ¾ cup all purpose flour
¼ cup granulated sugar
½ teaspoon salt
¾ cup whole milk
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 packet of instant yeast
1 egg
Filling
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 ½ tablespoons ground cinnamon
Cream Cheese Icing
6 ounces block cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2/3 cup confectioner’s sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Begin this recipe by mixing the dough. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt. Set aside.
Now, combine the milk and butter in a microwavable safe bowl. Heat in 30 second increments until the butter has melted and the mixture is warm to touch. Next, whisk in the yeast until it dissolves.
Add the milk and butter mixture along with the egg to the dry ingredients. Stir to combine. Mix until a soft dough forms.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes. Shape dough into a smooth ball. Place in a lightly greased bowl and cover. Let rest for about 10 minutes.
While the dough rests, prepare the filling. In a small bowl, add the softened butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Mix well.
Now, roll the dough out into roughly a 12 x 10-inch rectangle. Spread the filling atop the dough using a silicone spatula. Cut into 10 or 12 strips. Roll each strip and place into a lightly greased baking dish.
Cover with aluminum foil and allow the rolls to rise in a warm place for about 90 minutes, or until double in size.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Place the rolls in the oven for about 25 minutes, or until lightly brown. While the rolls bake, prepare the icing. In a medium size mixing bowl, add the cream cheese and butter. Stir to combine. Now add in the confectioners’ sugar and vanilla. Mix well.
Once the rolls are finished baking, use a butter knife or icing spatula to spread the icing over the warm rolls. Serve immediately or cover leftover rolls tightly and store at room temperature for up to two days, or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Enjoy!
