Donovan Mitchell had 34 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers handed the Portland Trail Blazers their fifth straight loss with a 109-95 victory on Wednesday night. Evan Mobley added 21 points and 12 rebounds, and the Cavaliers finished 2-2 on their western road trip. Jerami Grant led shorthanded Portland with 17 points and Duop Reath, a center on a two-way contract, came of the bench to score 16 points.

Giving Deshaun Watson a fully guaranteed $230 million contract has turned into another disaster for the Cleveland Browns. It’s the biggest one yet for a franchise known for its failures. Watson will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury that requires surgery, a devastating blow for a 6-3 team with a stingy defense and playoff hopes. The ramifications of the injury extend far beyond this season, too. Watson is owed $46 million each of the next three years with a cap hit of almost $64 million per season.

The rugged AFC North is the only division with four winning teams and they’re playing each other in Week 11. It starts with Bengals-Ravens on Thursday night. Both teams are frustrated following tough losses. The Ravens need a win to stay in first place. The Bengals can’t afford another loss to remain in contention for the division crown with the Steelers and Browns both at 6-3. They had the same record through nine games in each of the past two seasons and ended up winning the North. Lamar Jackson had an excellent game against the Bengals in Week 2 when he led the Ravens to a 27-24 road win.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are hopeful tight end Pat Freiermuth can return in time for a showdown with Cleveland. Freiermuth hasn't played since injuring his right hamstring in a loss to Houston on Oct. 1. He was on track to return in late October before aggravating the injury before a visit to the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 22. Freiermuth says he's been pleased by the team's progress in his absence, but is eager to help out an offense that ranks 29th in the league in passing.

Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens lead the AFC North through Week 10 for the fourth time in five seasons. They haven't won the division since 2019. The past two seasons, they’ve been passed down the stretch by Cincinnati. A win this week would make that prospect a good deal less likely in 2023. The Ravens host the Bengals on Thursday night with a chance to sweep the season series against Cincinnati and take a 2 1/2-game lead over the last-place Bengals.

The Baltimore Ravens are an NFL-best 19-3 at home in prime time since 2008. They'll try to improve on that when they host the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night. The Ravens lead the AFC North through Week 10 for the fourth time in five seasons. They haven't won the division since 2019. Cincinnati is 5-4 after nine games for the third straight season. The Bengals won the division and went to the AFC title game in each of the past two.

Georgia has moved up to No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings, nudging past Ohio State, with third-place Michigan and fourth-place Florida State holding their spots in the top four. Georgia had maybe its most impressive performance of the season Saturday, beating Mississippi 52-17. It was the second straight week the Bulldogs defeated a ranked opponent, after downing Missouri the game before. Washington was fifth again, followed by Oregon, Texas and Alabama. Missouri at nine and Louisville were new to the top 10 this week.

Sidney Crosby recorded his 16th career hat trick, scoring twice in the third period, rallying the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3 for their league-leading fifth straight win. Crosby extended his point streak to nine games with the 558th, 559th and 560th goals of his career, also adding an assist.  Jake Guentzel and Erik Karlsson each contributed a goal and an assist, and Tristan Jarry stopped 28 shots in his fourth consecutive win. Kirill Marchenko, Yegor Chinakhov and Alexandre Texier scored, and Elvis Merzlikins stopped 38 for Columbus, which has lost six straight and two in a row at home.

The Cleveland Guardians made a surprise roster move with starter Cal Quantrill, designating the right-hander for assignment. Quantrill had a rough 2023 season, going 4-7 with a 5.24 ERA and making two trips to the injured list with shoulder issues. He finished nicely, going 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA in his last six starts. The 28-year-old Quantrill was a big part of the Guardians winning the AL Central in 2022 when he went 15-5 and made 32 starts. Cleveland has seven days to trade or release Quantrill — or hope he can get through waivers. He’s eligible for arbitration and is under team contractual control until 2026. Quantrill was projected to make about $6.6 million in arbitration next season.

Cleveland Browns star running back Nick Chubb had surgery Wednesday to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, a season-ending injury he sustained in Week 2 at Pittsburgh. This was Chubb’s second procedure on the knee since he got hurt when he was hit low on a running play on Sept. 18. The Browns had hoped his injury wasn’t as severe, but during an initial surgery it was discovered he had torn his ACL. They believe the second surgery was a success. The Browns expect the 27-year-old Chubb will be back at some point in the 2024 season. He worked his way back from an injury to the same knee while at Georgia.

Freshman guard Mikaylah Williams scored 42 points and No. 7 LSU rolled to a 109-79 rout over Kent State. It was the most points ever scored by an LSU freshman and the most by a Tigers player since Cornelia Gayden scored 43 vs. TCU in 1996. Junior transfer Aneesah Morrow added 17 points, eight rebounds and nine steals for LSU, which scored 70 points in the second half.

David Braun appears to be the biggest winner among the Big Ten’s first-year coaches.Northwestern is in a position few would have envisioned when he was elevated to interim coach in the wake of a hazing and abuse scandal that cost Pat Fitzgerald his job. Northwestern is one of four Big Ten schools that began the season with new head coaches. Braun didn’t come with the cache of Wisconsin’s Luke Fickell or Nebraska’s Matt Rhule or even Purdue’s Ryan Walters. The Wildcats are one win away from bowl game eligibility.

De’Aaron Fox had 28 points and six assists in his return after missing two weeks with an ankle injury, and the Sacramento Kings gave coach Mike Brown his 400th career victory with a 132-120 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Domantas Sabonis added 23 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds for the Kings, who swept the Cavs a season ago. Keegan Murray had a season-high 25 points with five 3-pointers. Donovan Mitchell led the Cavs with 22 points despite going scoreless in the first quarter. Caris LeVert had 21 points and Max Strus scored 19.

Zach Edey finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds while Braden Smith added 12 points and seven assists Monday to give No. 2 Purdue an 83-71 victory over Xavier. The Boilermakers extended their school record for consecutive regular-season wins against non-conference foes to 27 by beating Xavier for the first time since December 2001. The Musketeers were led by Desmond Claude with 15 points. But, like most teams, they struggled against Edey, the 7-foot-4 center and reigning national player of the year. Purdue led the entire second half, finally putting it away with an 11-5 run that made it 71-57 with 6:28 to go.

The Cleveland Browns keep pushing. Despite some key injuries, including a shoulder issue that kept quarterback Deshaun Watson out for all but 12 plays in four October games, the Browns are in the thick of the AFC North race. On Sunday, they overcame playing without their starting tackles, Watson's first pass being returned for a touchdown and a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to stun the first-place Baltimore Ravens 33-31. The Browns have been displaying resiliency all season, and much of the credit goes to coach Kevin Stefanski, who has kept his team focused amid significant adversity.

There’s nothing unusual about the Cincinnati Bengals being 5-4 at this point of the season, but they may look back on their early struggles and Sunday’s loss to visiting Houston as too much to overcome this year. Cincinnati was 5-4 each of the past two years and rallied each time to win the AFC North and reach the conference title game. This year, the AFC North may be tougher than ever. The Bengals are in last place, and their remaining schedule includes rematches with Baltimore and Cleveland and two games against Pittsburgh.

Jim Harbaugh stood behind a lectern and delivered prepared remarks Monday to kick off a week in which he will either lose another opportunity to coach No. 2 Michigan or win a hearing to at least temporarily lift the Big Ten’s penalty against him for a sign-stealing scheme. Harbaugh shared his take on various topics but said he would save his opinions on the conference’s punishment for his day in court, which comes Friday. Sherrone Moore will fill in for Harbaugh if he's still suspended for Saturday's game at Maryland.

DeMarlo Hale was hired by the Toronto Blue Jays as associate manager under John Schneider after three seasons as Terry Francona’s bench coach in Cleveland. The 62-year-old Chicago native was Toronto’s bench coach from 2013-18, became an Atlanta minor league coach and special assistant in 2019, then was interim first base coach in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season when Eric Young decided not to travel. Hale served as Cleveland’s acting manager from July 29, 2021, through the end of the season while Francona was sidelined by health issues. The team went 30-33 with Hale in charge.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will have an MRI on his left ankle after hurting it in Sunday's last-second win at Baltimore. Watson twice rolled his ankle in the first half but stayed in the game and went 14 of 14 for 134 yards after halftime as the Browns rallied in the fourth quarter for a 33-31 win. Watson left M&T Bank Stadium in a walking boot. He said after the game he will be ready this week when the Browns host the Steelers. After twisting his ankle the second time, Watson left the field early to get treatment. Backup P.J. Walker threw a long pass on the final play before halftime.

There are more perfect 10s at the top of the AP college football poll than there have been 14 years. The top-five teams in the rankings are all 10-0. The last time there were at least five teams at 10-0 or better atop the rankings was 2009, when there were six. As the best teams in the country roll along in a season that has lacked big upsets, the top-five has been unchanged for five weeks: No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Florida State, No. 5 Washington.

Walkoff field goals. Comebacks. Close games. Sunday was filled with competitive action across the NFL. Just the way the league wants it. Five games ended on game-winning field goals in regulation, the most in one day in NFL history. Two teams overcame deficits on their final drive. Eight games were decided by four points or less. It wasn’t all fun and excitement. There also was an abundance of penalty flags, poor tackling, sloppy mistakes and terrible quarterback play in a few of the games.

Alexis Lafreniere’s second goal of the game tied it with 11 seconds left in regulation, and then he had the only scored in the shootout as the New York Rangers beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3. Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist for the Metropolitan Division-leading Rangers, who are 9-0-1 in their last 10 games. Artemi Panarin had two assists to extend his season-opening point streak to 14 games. Jonathan Quick made 26 saves. Justin Danforth, Adam Fantilli and Sean Kuraly scored for Columbus, with lost its fifth straight (0-3-2). Erik Gudbranson had two assists and Elvis Merzlikins finished with 37 saves. In the tiebreaker, Lafreniere backhanded the puck past Merzlikins in the third round, and Quick denied Alexandre Texier to secure the win.

Columbus scored three goals in the first 33 minutes and the Crew advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals with a 4-2 victory over Atlanta United in the rubber match of a first-round MLS Cup series. Columbus (17-9-9) upped its unbeaten streak at home in all competitions to 17, but the third-seeded Crew will hit the road for a semifinal matchup with No. 2 seed Orlando City on Nov. 25. Top-seeded FC Cincinnati will host the fourth-seeded Philadelphia Union in the other semifinal, also on Nov. 25. The Crew hit the ground running against Atlanta United, grabbing the lead in the 9th minute on an unassisted goal by Darlington Nagbe. It was Nagbe’s third career postseason goal and his second with the Crew.

The Bengals produced a touchdown on their opening drive and forced three turnovers. That was the formula that helped Cincinnati to four straight wins. But it wasn't enough against the Houston Texans on Sunday. The Bengals lost 30-27 to fall to 5-4, last in the AFC North. Cincinnati plays Thursday night at division-leading Baltimore. The Bengals have started 5-4 each of the past three seasons, and in the previous two, they rallied to win the division and reach the AFC Championship game.

C.J. Stroud directed a last-minute, game-winning drive for the second straight week, finishing with 356 yards passing and leading the Houston Texans to a 30-27 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. With the game tied at 27-all and 1:33 remaining, Stroud moved the Texans 55 yards in six plays to set up a 38-yard field goal by Matt Ammendola as time expired. Noah Brown had 172 yards receiving for the Texans and Devin Singletary ran for 150 yards and a score. Joe Burrow threw for 357 yards and two touchdowns for the Bengals but was intercepted twice in the fourth quarter.

Dustin Hopkins kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired to cap a furious Cleveland rally in the fourth quarter, and the Browns edged the Baltimore Ravens 33-31. Cleveland trailed 31-17 before Deshaun Watson delivered the type of victory the Browns have been waiting for from their high-priced quarterback. Watson threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Moore with 8:57 remaining. Then one of Lamar Jackson’s passes caromed high into the air and was picked off by Greg Newsome II, and he returned the interception 34 yards for a TD just 41 seconds later. Still down one because of a missed extra point, Cleveland drove 58 yards for the winning kick.

Donovan Mitchell got the best of Golden State and Draymond Green, finishing with 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals on a night Green was ejected, and Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Warriors 118-110. Stephen Curry scored 30 points to lead the Warriors, who lost Green at the 6:23 mark of the third quarter with eight points, five rebounds and four assists. Curry has four or more 3s in his first 10 games, the first time that's happened in NBA history.

Marvin Harrison Jr. caught two of Kyle McCord’s three touchdown passes and rushed for another score, helping No. 3 Ohio State pound Michigan State 38-3. McCord threw for a career-high 335 yards for the 10-0 Buckeyes, who overwhelmed the Spartans with touchdowns on five of their six first-half possessions. Ohio State’s defense, missing several key players due to injuries, held Michigan State to 182 total yards and two third-down conversions on 14 attempts. McCord completed 24 of 31 passes before being relieved in the fourth quarter. Harrison finished with seven receptions for 149 yards.

Corey Kiner rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns as Cincinnati piled up 204 rushing yards and the Bearcats earned their first Big 12 win with a 24-14 win over Houston Saturday night.Emory Jones threw for 131 yards and a touchdown for the Bearcats, which snapped a seven-game losing streak.Jones threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Montgomery in the first quarter, and Kiner rushed for a 1-yard touchdown with eight minutes left in the second to put Cincinnati (3-7, 1-6 Big 12) ahead 14-7 in the second. Kiner added a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth.The Bearcats outgained Houston 368-241 yards.
