The Berkeley County prosecutor and county commissioners have officially filed a petition seeking the removal of Sheriff Nathan Harmon from his position. The petition claims that Harmon has violated the public's trust and has used his power in an abusive manner. The county officials argue that Harmon is no longer suitable to serve as the sheriff of Berkeley County. However, it will ultimately be up to a three-judge panel to decide on Harmon's fate.
Berkeley County Prosecutor Catie Wilkes Delligatti clarified that the allegations against Harmon are currently just claims and that it will be the court's responsibility to make a final determination. Delligatti made these comments during an interview on WEPM radio's "Panhandle Live." In support of the petition, the Berkeley County Commission has also passed a resolution acknowledging the allegations brought against Harmon.
According to the petition, the allegations against Harmon cover a wide range of misconduct. The document accuses the sheriff of misusing public resources for personal gain, taking and using government property for his own benefit, and exploiting subordinates for private purposes. Furthermore, the petition states that Harmon attempted to obstruct justice by making false statements to a West Virginia State Police investigator and destroying evidence in relation to an investigation into his daughter, Carrie Harmon.
The incident involving Carrie Harmon occurred in January and has received significant attention from local news outlets due to her father's involvement. Sheriff Harmon pleaded not guilty earlier this month to four misdemeanor charges, which allege that he obstructed the investigation into Carrie Harmon's vehicle crash and provided false statements to a West Virginia State Trooper who was independently assigned to the case.
In addition to the events surrounding Harmon's daughter, the petition for his removal from office includes numerous other activities as evidence. These activities further support the claims against him and strengthen the case for his removal as Berkeley County Sheriff. The situation remains ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
