A former West Virginia State Police trooper, Joseph Comer, pleaded no contest to criminal charges in Ritchie County on Friday and was subsequently released from jail. Comer, known as a whistleblower, pleaded no contest to domestic battery and guilty to violating a protective order.
As part of a plea deal with Ritchie County prosecutors, a strangulation charge against Comer was dismissed, and his attorney, David Moye, stated that the domestic battery conviction could also be removed if Comer fulfills certain requirements outlined in the plea bargain. The charges against Comer arose from a custody exchange with his ex-wife, Vikki Marra.
Comer has admitted to writing a letter that led to an investigation into the operations of the state police, specifically concerning the video recording of the women's locker room at the State Police Academy.
This investigation is still ongoing. In September, state police announced their intention to terminate Comer's employment with the agency.
