APPLE GROVE, W.Va. (WV News) — The team at Nucor West Virginia is starting to grow, according to a company spokesperson.
The company, which held a groundbreaking ceremony for its sheet steel mill project in Mason County at the end of October, has hired nearly 100 team members so far, said Markee Schindler, Nucor West Virginia’s talent and community relations supervisor.
Upon completion, the mill is expected to create approximately 800 high-quality manufacturing jobs.
Construction of the state-of-the art facility will create an additional 1,000 jobs.
The company’s hiring process is ongoing, Schindler said.
“Our hiring timeline will continue to be reflective of our construction schedule,” she said. “Interested candidates should create a profile on the Nucor Talent Network, which will allow candidates to receive alerts with new job opportunities that match your interests.”
The company is also currently seeking applications for two academic work sponsorship programs, Schindler said.
“The programs are very similar in structure and education — both are associates programs that combine education with on-the-job training,” she said. “Both programs require application to the educational institution and for the work sponsorship, and both programs require students to be 18 years of age before employment begins.”
Applications to one of the programs, the Nucor Technical Academy, are due by Dec. 31. This is a two-year program, primarily hosted in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, through Shelton State Community College and Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa.
Applicants to the other program, Kanawha Valley FAME, must apply before Feb. 1 to be eligible for interviews Feb. 24. This is a two-year program, based in West Virginia through BridgeValley Community and Technical College and Nucor Steel West Virginia.
Nucor West Virginia team members have already participated in numerous charitable and community-based initiatives in and around Mason County, Schindler said.
“As Rex Query, executive vice president for sheet products and talent resources, mentioned during the groundbreaking event, we build a facility where we want to make a home,” Schindler said. “Nucor teammates not only live our culture on the job, but also when they take care of their neighbors, and we consider the community to be our partner.”
Nucor employees have begun volunteering monthly at Crosslight of Hope food pantry, have participated at three county fair livestock sales, are spending time at Mason County schools and are members of local chambers of commerce, Schindler said.
Gov. Jim Justice announced that Nucor had chosen West Virginia as the location of its next mill in January 2022, saying the facility would be a “key part of West Virginia’s DNA long into the future.”
The new mill will be equipped to produce 84-inch sheet products and, among other features, will include a 76-inch tandem cold mill and two galvanizing lines.
The facility will have the capacity to produce up to 3 million tons of sheet steel per year for the automotive, appliance, HVAC, heavy equipment, agricultural, transportation and construction markets.
The facility also will include advanced downstream processing capabilities, including a tandem cold mill, annealing capabilities and initially two galvanizing lines. Galvanizing capabilities will include an advanced high-end automotive line with full inspection capabilities, as well as a construction-grade line.
Following the groundbreaking ceremony on Oct. 20, the mill’s 2 1/2-year construction process has begun, Schindler said.
“Site development and grading is ongoing and will continue into next year,” she said. “Work on W.Va. Route 2, directly in front of the mill site, will be complete in January 2024, and building structures should begin to go up starting in early Q2 2024.”
At the peak of construction, the company expects to have around 2,000 contractors onsite, Schindler said.
“Individuals with construction experience that are interested in learning more about employment with our construction partners should keep watch on the Nucor West Virginia landing page, as we will be providing more information in the coming months,” she said.
