WESTERNPORT, Md. (WV News) — A Keyser woman was apprehended Thursday evening after leading Allegany County Sheriff’s deputies on a chase on a moped.
Tonya Lynn VanMeter, 42, is currently housed at the Allegany County Detention Center awaiting extradition to West Virginia. Deputies with the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office say they observed her running through a traffic stop and they attempted to stop her but she drove away, shouting obscenities at them.
As the moped reached the 200 block of Maryland Avenue in Westernport, she drove across several residents’ lawns.
Deputies said she eventually ditched the moped and ran toward Westernport Elementary School, where she crossed the parking lot and continued on foot.
As the deputies conducted a search, assisted by Mineral County Sheriff’s deputies and other law enforcement, they located a subject matching her description in the area of Allegany Street and took her into custody.
At that time Van Meter reportedly provided false identification to the deputies, but was positively identified with the assistance of West Virginia State Police and the Mineral County Sheriff's Office.
Charged with fleeing and eluding, obstructing and hindering, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and fraud (providing incorrect identification in order to avoid prosecution), VanMeter was ordered confined to the Allegany County Detention Center without bail, pending extradition proceedings for her return to West Virginia where she is wanted on an arrest warrant.
